Turtle Island Teachings

Experience the values based learning of Turtle Island Teachings with First Nations Storyteller Carrie Saganace. Together with Briane Webb, a professional educator with more than 20 years of experience, this program will guide students in grades 6 -9 through a series of workshops designed to help them integrate indigenous values into their daily lives.

We will explore the seven sacred teachings based on the ancient wisdom of the inhabitants of Turtle Island. This will be the foundation we will use to explore students sense of self, and how to develop respectful and responsible relationships with others and their environments.

Each week, a different value will be explored in depth, seeing how the ancient values apply to modern life.  Unconditional Love of Eagle, Respect of Buffalo, Strength of Bear, Humility of Wolf, Wisdom of Beaver, Honesty of Sasquatch, Truth of Turtle. The teachings provide a foundation for self reflection, confidence, and appreciation for their place on this Land.

Space is limited to eleven participants, so that Ms. Saganace and Ms. Webb are able to provide students with individualized attention and time to have their voices heard. These workshops will include stories, activities, and sharing circles that will have opportunities for students to participate as both a listener and a speaker. We will also have a weekly craft along with fun group and individual activities to help them navigate the continual changes of Turtle Island and their place in it. Weekly reflections to take home and apply to their life will help lessons extend beyond the time they spend with us.
